What your Body Needs after Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction Surgery | Edina MNBreast augmentation surgery has been one of the leading cosmetic procedures among women for several years. While still popular, we are seeing significant changes in the area of breast surgeries. Not only are many women seeking smaller sized implants to enhance their figure, there are also more women – and even some men – who express an interest in reducing the natural size of breasts.

Excess breast tissue causes both physical and emotional turmoil that just isn’t necessary. The physical pain that a woman must endure, such as indentations from bra straps and chronic shoulder discomfort, can be eliminated through breast reduction surgery. Patients of our Edina cosmetic plastic surgery office usually want to know what they should expect after breast reduction in terms of recovery. If you are considering this procedure, here’s what you need to know . . .

There is a fair amount of tissue disruption that takes place during the breast reduction procedure. However, that doesn’t necessarily translate into an intensely difficult recovery. Many patients feel better far more quickly than they expect. That being said, there are tips for recovery that shouldn’t be overlooked:

  • Expect to take prescription pain medication for at least a few days. Waiting to see if pain is intolerable could be a straight path to unnecessary stress. Surgical patients are encouraged to stay ahead of pain by taking the appropriate medication before they become uncomfortable. After a few days, it may be possible to switch to an over-the-counter pain reliever.
  • Hydration is a vital necessity to physical healing. If you normally drink 8 glasses of water a day, increase that by a few glasses while your tissues are soaking up fluid for recovery.
  • If you haven’t heard, women who undergo breast surgery gain a whole new appreciation for their bra. Initially, the breasts will need the full support of a surgical bra. After a week or two, this may decrease to a good sports bra and, eventually, to the normal bra you will wear daily. Just remember, the better the support after surgery, the less discomfort you face.
  • It will be necessary to ease back in to your old routine. Many patients take two or more weeks off of work to recover in the comfort of their home. While light activity like taking shorts walks can be good for circulation and healing, exercise should not resume for 3 weeks or more.
