Liposuction Risks and Side Effects

Liposuction Risks and Side EffectsWhether you undergo any surgery, there will be some risks involved. This is to be expected. With that in mind, you can avoid a number of side effects and complications related to surgery so long as you follow your surgeon’s instructions for pre-operative and post-operative care. When you visit with Maple Grove and Edina plastic surgeon Dr. Christopher Kovanda, he will determine what solution would be best for you and your needs. If you are looking to get rid of problem pockets of fat in different parts of the body, for instance, a good option may be liposuction.

About Liposuction

Edina liposuction is a surgery that is performed to remove stubborn pockets of fat from different parts of the body. You see, there are some bits of body fat that do not respond to diet or exercise, even if you eat really healthy and exercise regularly. For these matters, you need to consider liposuction. Liposuction is not a weight loss surgery, however, as only a certain amount of body fat can be safely removed from the body.

The Liposuction Procedure

During the liposuction procedure, a thin tube called a cannula will be inserted into the treatment areas. This cannula will be used to extract fat from the body in a safe manner. If you’re undergoing other body contouring surgeries, chances are that you will also undergo liposuction for an efficient and exact removal of body fat.

Possible Risks Associated with Liposuction

There are some risks and potentially adverse side effects that you should keep in mind when it comes to liposuction. We’d like to cover some of these right now.

First of all, liposuction carries the same risks as a number of other surgeries. This includes infection, swelling, bruising, discomfort, blood clots, allergic reactions to anesthesia, poor healing times, and poor reaction to pain relievers. In some cases, patients may notice excessive draining after liposuction or, conversely, fluid accumulation after liposuction. (Fluid drainage is common after liposuction, as surgical liquid, anesthetic, as well as some bodily fluids will drain from the body from cannula insertion sites.)

How to Minimize Liposuction Risks

There are plenty of things that you can do to minimize complications or even eliminate the chance of experiencing adverse side effects. For one, if you are a smoker, it is important that you quit smoking at least two weeks before surgery and that you continue not to smoke until at least a month after surgery. In addition, it is important that patients wear their compression garments for up to a few weeks after surgery to ensure that they heal properly. Patients should not engage in strenuous activity in the first week after surgery, though they are encouraged to take light walks to help with circulation. Additional steps to effective post-operative and pre-operative care can be discussed during the consultation process.
