Fine lines and wrinkles can age the face beyond our years. We would like to look our best, but we may not need the dramatic results that typically come from plastic surgery. For those that are looking for a minor touch-up, Dr. Christopher J. Kovanda, a specialist in Minneapolis plastic surgery, can offer a quick and easy solution. Dr. Kovanda offers patients quick treatments such as BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® to give your skin a smoother and more youthful appearance. What is the difference between the two treatments? Dr. Kovanda can discuss these options with you, but here is a quick overview.
What is BOTOX®?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a prescription drug that upon injection into the problem area, can temporarily paralyze muscles. It contains a purified and safe form of botulinum toxin A, or Clostridium Botulinum. Large amounts of this toxin can cause botulism, however the small diluted amounts found in BOTOX can be used to our advantage. The BOTOX® Cosmetic blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles. This prevents the muscles from contracting and allows wrinkles to relax and soften.
BOTOX® vs Dysport®
Like BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport is an injectable neuromodulator that blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles. The key difference between the two injectables is their slight difference in formulation of the same bacterium, Clostridium Botulinum. Both injectables are placed directly into the muscle underneath a furrow, weakening the muscle to the point where it cannot contract.
When you come in for a consultation, Dr. Kovanda will assess which injectable is right for you!
Dysport® & BOTOX® Injection Sites
BOTOX® & Dysport have the advantage of providing both medical and cosmetic benefits to patients. Some medical treatments include excessive underarm sweating and muscle spasms. Cosmetically, these injectables are used to treat the following:
- Forehead furrows
- Frown lines
- Crow’s feet
- Skin bands on the neck
Benefits of BOTOX® & Dysport®
If you are considering BOTOX® treatment, you should keep in mind the following:
- BOTOX® treatment takes only a few minutes and does not require the use of anesthesia.
- You can expect to see full results within three to seven days after undergoing treatment.
- The effects can be expected to last for four to six months.
- Temporary bruising is the most common side effect of BOTOX® Cosmetic. In rare instances a headache may occur but this should resolve itself within a day or two.
- BOTOX® Cosmetic is not recommended for women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or those who have a neurological condition.
BOTOX® Cosmetic & Dysport® Procedure
For both treatments, a very fine needle is injected directly into facial muscles that are causing your furrows and lines. These injections requires no anesthetic, however Dr. Kovanda may choose to numb the area to be injected with ice packs or a topical anesthetic cream.
How Long Will My Results Last?
Once your treatment is complete, results are noticeable within a just a few days. Patient results typically last up to four months and can even extend for longer periods if you are treated on a regular basis.
Side Effects & Risks
Side effects of BOTOX® and Dysport injectables are usually mild and temporary. There is no downtime after treatment and patients are able to perform normal activities immediately after leaving the office. Some patients may exhibit the following side effects on or around the injection sites. These symptoms are typically mild and can include the following:
