The Tumescent Liposuction Technique

The Tumescent Liposuction Technique MinneapolisSo many people would like to look trim, slim, and fit, but there’s a little bit of problematic body fat that keeps them away from attaining this goal. They may diet, they may exercise, they may take great care of themselves, but maybe there’s just that one pocket of fat in the love handles or saddlebags that won’t go away. Sound familiar? Well, if it does, you are not alone. That’s where meeting with a skilled plastic surgeon can actually work wonders for you.

We’d like to take a look right now at the nature of tumescent liposuction, which can do a great deal to help you achieve the aesthetic results that you have always wanted.

About Traditional Liposuction

It may be helpful to first consider the nature of a traditional liposuction. During liposuction, a small metal tube called a cannula is introduced into the skin. Using the cannula, a plastic surgeon suctions out problematic pockets of fat from the patient’s body. By doing this, that fat is extracted and the treated area is fat free.

What is tumescent liposuction?

Tumescent liposuction adds a new step to the liposuction process. Rather than simply suction out the fat, the tumescent liposuction surgery uses a special liquid solution to assist in the fat removal process. This liquid is introduced into the treatment area before the surgery is performed. In a few minutes, the fat in the treatment area hardens, making it much easier for the surgeon to identify and extract with the cannula.

What is in the tumescent fluid?

The tumescent fluid consists of a cocktail of lidocaine (a local anesthetic), saline (a safe salt water solution), and epinephrine (shrinks blood vessels). The fluid is totally safe and is suctioned out as part of the liposuction surgery. Any fluid that is retained will drain from the treatment area as the patient recovers.

Benefits of Tumescent Liposuction

Many patients who undergo tumescent liposuction report less sensations of discomfort and soreness after surgery and usually experience less bleeding, swelling, and bruising as they recover. The tumescent fluid really makes the procedure much safer and more effective on the whole.

Ideal Candidates for Tumescent Liposuction

The best candidates for tumescent liposuction are people who have pockets of fat in their body that won’t respond to a healthy diet or regular exercise. These patients should be in good overall health and not suffer from any serious health conditions that would make surgery risky.

We want to stress that liposuction is not intended as a weight loss procedure. It is only used for small amounts of cosmetic fat reduction.

The Tumescent Liposuction Procedure

The tumescent liposuction procedure is performed usually under local anesthetic. When the tumescent fluid is introduced into the treatment area, patients will likely feel a slight pinch. This is normal. The fluid will then cause the fat to harden. At this point, the canula is introduced into the treatment area and the surgeon uses careful motions to suction out all of the problematic fat without affecting other tissues.
